Woodend Primary School is a dual campus school located approximately 65km north of Melbourne on the old Calder Highway. The February 2013 enrolment was 395, an increase of 17 on 2012. Our Grade 4 students attend the school’s historic rural campus in Carlsruhe, several kilometres further North for four days each week. Woodend Primary School is well resourced and able to provide a broad and comprehensive curriculum with an emphasis on the core areas of Literacy and Numeracy. Student achievement outcomes have generally been consistently above expectation and the school continually aims for the highest quality of teaching and learning.
Students at Woodend Primary are provided with specialist teachers in Music, Art and Physical Education and the early intervention program, Reading Recovery, is provided to children in Grade 1 who don’t reach the Prep benchmark in Reading. The school has a particularly energetic and inclusive Physical Education program and many students regularly compete in inter-school sports.
The school also has a thriving Instrumental Music Program. Just over half our students learn violin, cello, flute, saxophone, drums, guitar, keyboard, trumpet, trombone or singing. Many students participate in the school choirs and recorder playing is incorporated into some classroom music lessons. The vibrant ‘strings’ program runs a junior ensemble and has close ties with the Woodend Strings Orchestra - ‘Resonance’. Junior students are also able to participate in a Pre-Instrumental Music Program to prepare them for taking on a musical instrument in the following year.
